چکیده

Performance evaluation in multi-cluster processor co-allocation like in many other parallel job scheduling problemsis mostly done by computing the average metric value for the entire job stream. This does not give a comprehensive understanding of the relative performance of the different jobs grouped by their characteristics. It is however the characteristics that affect how easy/hard jobs are to schedule. We, therefore, do not get to understand scheduler performance at job type level. In this paper, we study the performance of multi-cluster processor co-allocation for different job groups grouped by their size, components and widest component. We study their relative performance, sensitivity to parameters and how their performance is affected by the heuristics used to break them up into components. We show that the widest component us characteristic that most affects job schedulability. We also show that to get better performance, jobs should be broken up in such a way that the width of the widest component is minimized.

Co-allocation with Communication Considerations in Multi-cluster Systems

Processor co-allocation can be of performance benefit. This is because breaking jobs into components reduces overall cluster fragmentation. However, the slower inter-cluster communication links increase job execution times. This leads to performance deterioration which can make co-allocation unviable. We use intra-cluster to inter-cluster communication speed ratio and job communication intensit...

Proposed Feature Selection for Dynamic Thermal Management in Multicore Systems

Increasing the number of cores in order to the demand of more computing power has led to increasing the processor temperature of a multi-core system. One of the main approaches for reducing temperature is the dynamic thermal management techniques. These methods divided into two classes, reactive and proactive. Proactive methods manage the processor temperature, by forecasting the temperature be...

TLA: Temporal look-ahead processor allocation method for heterogeneous multi-cluster systems

In a heterogeneousmulti-cluster (HMC) system, processor allocation is responsible for choosing available processors among clusters for job execution. Traditionally, processor allocation in HMC considers only resource fragmentation or processor heterogeneity, which leads to heuristics such as Best-Fit (BF) and Fastest-First (FF). However, those heuristics only favor certain types of workloads an...

Simplified Power Allocation for the DSL Multi-Access Channel through Column-wise Diagonal Dominance

In the newest generation of DSL systems crosstalk is the dominant source of performance degradation. Many crosstalk cancellation schemes have been proposed. These schemes typically employ some form of co-ordination between modems and lead to large performance gains. The use of crosstalk cancellation means that power allocation should be viewed as a multi-user problem. In this paper we investiga...

An Evaluation of Processor Co-allocation for Different System Configurations and Job Structures

In systems consisting of multiple clusters of processors such as our Distributed ASCI1 Supercomputer (DAS), jobs may request co-allocation, i.e., the simultaneous allocation of processors in different clusters. We simulate such systems ignoring communication among the tasks of jobs, and determine the response times for different types and sizes of job requests, and for different numbers and siz...
